Paris in July: French movies

It doesn't matter which month it is, I quite often enjoy watching French movies. This year, I haven't watched as many as I normally would but I still though I would share some brief thoughts on the ones I have seen before Paris in July ends!

On Sunday, I went and saw Colours of Time which is a dual time line film, set in the 1890s and current day. Whilst there have been lots of dual time line books around for years, it is not something that you see all the time in movies  and when I do see them it does tend to be in European movies. In this one, a group of strangers are bought together when it is identified that 30 of them are descendants from one woman. This is important because a developer wants to knock down the ramshackle house that she owned in Normandy but they can't do so without their permission. Four of them are nominated to go and look at the house and there they find a painting, letters and photographs of their common ancestor. In the other strand, we follow Adele from rural Normandy to Paris where she is trying to locate her mother who left her to be raised by her grandmother as a baby. We get to see many of the historical sites of Paris and meet some interesting characters from history. There is one short section that is a bit weird but otherwise it was a really nice movie. Another movie we saw with a strong focus on art was The Stolen Painting which is about a painting that was thought to be lost during WWII being found. It was based on a true story. In the movie, a young factory work buys a house, contents and all and it turns out one of the paintings is a masterpiece by Egon Schiele. It is a combination legal drama and art history. Earlier this year I watched a movie called Nun in the City while on the plane home from India. I do seem to watch quite a few foreign films on planes, and now I look for them when I am on a long haul flight. This was such a fun movie. A bit silly, but fun nonetheless. A nun named Lucie finds herself discovering what life is like after 20 years in a convent. The world has changed a lot since she has last been out in the world!

 

The good news is when I was at the movies on Sunday I saw three trailers for upcoming French files and they all looked really good!
