Weekend Cooking: Gadgets

I had a day off during the week and spent some of it at the local shopping centre (as you do!). I bought a lovely new flat screen TV, but not before I was walking past the kitchenware shop and I saw these little beauties just begging to be bought! I know that people have probably seen them before, but this was the first time I had seen them. They are measuring cups, shaped as Russian nesting dolls! So cute.

Funnily enough, I bought these on Tuesday, and only today has the thought crossed my mind that they may be US metric measuring cups and not Australian. Oh well! I already have two sets of plastic measuring cups in my drawer. Once I figure out if they are US or Australian, I might be able to consolidate!

I had been thinking about doing a post about gadgets etc for a while now, so buying these have prompted me to actually write it.

As cool as these are, they probably won't be my absolute favourite kitchen gadget. That title goes to the onion chopper thing that I bought from Tupperware a couple of years ago. Okay, so the technical name appears to be Turbochef mini, but whatever name Tupperware give it, in our house it is known as the onion chopper.

Mine looks a little bit different because the bowl part is clear with a red base, but the concepts are the same.

The main reason why I like this so much is that it is easy to use, very little onion smell on the hands, no tears, and that my son is the one who does the chopping generally because he loves using it. It chops onion, herbs, and in theory nuts and cheeses but I haven't used it for that.

So, there is my favourite kitchen gadget, and something new I bought this week.

What's your favourite gadget that you couldn't live without?

Weekend Cooking is hosted by Beth Fish Reads and is open to anyone who has any kind of food-related post to share: Book (novel, nonfiction) reviews, cookbook reviews, movie reviews, recipes, random thoughts, gadgets, fabulous quotations, photographs.

  1. Can't live without my George Forman - Lean Mean Grilling Machine. And my slow cooker is a close 2nd.

  2. Those Russian nesting doll measuring cups are adorable! I want a set!

I'd have to say the gadget I cannot live without is my OXO garlic press. I love garlic, but I hate chopping it up and smelling like it for days afterward! With the press, I just stick the clove in and squeeze. Voila...crushed garlic without the mess. LOVE it!

  3. I love those Russian nesting dolls! You could make a killing by buying those up and selling them on eBay to us Yanks!

  4. I love the Russian nesting dolls measuring cups! Oh, I want them! But then I'm guessing I could not make sense of the measuring on the cups since they probably don't use European amounts?

  5. I have one of those onion choppers as well and it is by far my favourite kitchen gadget!

  6. Those nesting doll measuring cups are a hit!

Not exactly a gadget but I love my Henckels knives. I had no idea the difference it would make having a good set of knives.

  7. Collins Booksellers, my slow cooker is up there on the list too for sure!

Erin, I think I own one of those, but I haven't used it! *off to check the drawers*

Katherine, it is an American company that makes them. Google Fred nesting measuring cups and you should find them.

Iris, I still haven't figured out what type of measurements they are!

    Zee, it's fabulous isn't it!

Leslie, I only have one decent knife. I think I need to invest in some decent knives and get rid of the crappy ones that just take up space in my drawer.

  8. Oh I want those nesting measuring cups too! I'll have to take a look around and see if we can get them in the States.

My favorite? Hummm. Maybe my rice cooker -- I use it all the time. But what I do without my food processor and pressure cooker when I them?

  9. You rarely see metric measuring cups here in the US - for some odd reason, we've stuck with cup as our standard. I want an onion chopper now!

  10. I NEED an onion chopper (I just use my big knife), and I've never seen nesting doll measuring cups. They're adorable!

  11. I love the nesting-doll measuring cups, and now I need to find out how to get my own! I also really like your onion chopper. It's much simpler than the mini food processor that I have been using!

  12. I adore my orange peeler gadget (also, tupperware) and am sad when I seem to misplace it all the time.

  13. Love the nesting-doll measuring cups. Not really a gadget, but I love a special spatula I've got where the handle doesn't stick out straight but comes up at not-quite 90 degrees from the flat bit. It makes it superb for flipping fried eggs and pancakes.
