A Wiggly Weekend Cooking

One of the albums that I have on my work computer is the greatest hits of an Australian band named Mental as Anything. They were around in the since the late 70s and were masters of fun pop songs. Some of their songs include If You Leave Me Can I Come To, Mr Natural, Too Many Times and I Didn't Mean to be Mean. The one that led me on my Wiggly journey today though was their song Let's Cook:

How's that for catchy, especially for a song that only has 5 different words in it! Perhaps it could be a Weekend Cooking theme song, although we might have to work out what the growl thing could mean in that context!

What I didn't know was that The Wiggles had done a version of this song with Mental as Anything, which led me to thinking about kid's songs about food. Now, I am only concentrating on The Wiggles songs about food because otherwise I would never actually finish writing this post.

Let's start with some old style Wiggles. When my son was small and we were in the right demographic for The Wiggles, there were a couple of food type songs, most notably Hot Potato and Fruit Salad Yummy Yummy.

When I was looking at Youtube, I was surprised to find that someone has uploaded a 10 hour long video that is just Fruit Salad over and over and over again! Don't worry, that isn't the one that I included in the post.

You have to ask WHY, and then how long would you last. For the record I lasted for two and half times of the song. Not long but still. In my defence I then want on to listen to multiple other Wiggles songs after that!

After clicking on this and that, I eventually found that there was a Wiggles album called Let's Eat which features all sorts of songs, including songs about food, digestion and hygiene amongst other things. What we did get is a glimpse into The Wiggles weekly menu. Apparently, Monday is Muffin day, Tuesday is Taco Day, Wednesday is Watermelon day, Thursday is Bratwurst Day, Friday is Fish Fry Day, Saturday is Sultana Day and Sunday is Sandwich Day. Not quite sure where cold spaghetti, hot potato, mashed banana and fruit salad fit in that menu but maybe their tastes are evolving.

Do you have a favourite kid's song about food?

  1. I love the Weekend Cooking theme song! Too fun. Do we growl when the recipe fails???

10 hours of fruit salad? How long before one would go stark raving mad?

You totally crack me up -- "maybe their tastes are evolving" Haaaaaaaa.

    1. I would suggest you would start going mad after about 15 minutes!

And growling when the recipe fails seems like a fair suggestion.

  2. Ha--it makes you wonder what the purpose of that 10-hour loop could possibly be. Maybe it's the only thing that will keep the baby sleeping soundly? Maybe it's the property of kidnappers who use it as a torture device on their hostages?

There are plenty of food-related kid songs in French. My daughters' favorite was probably this one, that gives you an opportunity to express how much you enjoy planting cabbage with your bum (or at least that's the way they always sang it).

    For a disturbing video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGQoupi26DY

    1. LOL. After watching Beth's video above it is easy to see some kids entertainment groups as a bit creepy.

  4. LOL, I don't think I'm a Wiggles fan, but I liked the Mental guy. I didn't last too long with the Wiggles but now Let's Eat is stuck in my head. Grrrrrowl :)

  6. Hilarious! I remember the band but not this song. It's so daggy! :D

Are the Wiggles still going? I can't listen to kids' songs like that, I really can't. I'm debating whether to just never let Hugh find out they exist - would that be too mean? ;)

    1. Shannon, even if you don't introduce him to the Wiggles there will be something else that you have to be subjected to over and over and over and over again.

The Wiggles are still going...just. 3 of the members are retiring at the end of the year and 3 new Wiggles are starting (including a girl Wiggle) along with the remaining Blue Wiggle.

  7. This is too funny and the songs are pretty good too! I mean, I'm sure kids love(d) The Wiggles :D Fruit Salad, yummy yummy... the video clip is almost as good as the Hot Potato/Cold Spaghetti/Mashed Banana song's :) I would've appreciated them when I was younger. Why wasn't this show exported to Europe??

    1. The Wiggles were successfully imported all over the place including the UK and Ireland. No idea why it didn't make it to the rest of Europe.

  8. haha too fun, Marg. My girls are just slightly older than your son so we missed the Wiggles craze. Still deciding if that's a good thing or not. ;)

"Apples and Bananas" is popular, but one of our favorites was "Sandwiches are Beautiful." Anyone know that one? We actually just tried to sing it the other day but forgot a lot of the words. How sad. :(

Here's a link to some dudes singing it on YouTube.. the song starts at the 2:06 mark.

I am sure that you had some other type of craze if not The Wiggles!

  9. You made me think of On Top of Old Smokey - a song I wouldn't have thought about for 30 years! The words:
    On top of spaghetti,
    All covered with cheese,
    I lost my poor meatball,
    When somebody sneezed.

    It rolled off the table,
    And on to the floor,
    And then my poor meatball,
    Rolled out of the door.

    It rolled in the garden,
    And under a bush,
    And then my poor meatball,
    Was nothing but mush.

    The mush was as tasty
    As tasty could be,
    And then the next summer,
    It grew into a tree.

    The tree was all covered,
    All covered with moss,
    And on it grew meatballs,
    And tomato sauce.

    So if you eat spaghetti,
    All covered with cheese,
    Hold on to your meatball,
    Whenever you sneeze.

  10. It is not really a song, but I loved (and still do) the Swedish Chef when I was a child. My favorite clip is that of the chocolate Moose. So funny :)

  12. Luckily my sons missed the Wiggles phenomenon, they were too old. But I remember Barney and Gullah Gullah Island being big.

  13. Cute post! I used to love a Dutch song about Aunt Hetty cooking spaghetti... Have tried to track the lyrics as an adult, but failed. I posted about that and sometimes get visitors searching for the same thing...
