In My Kitchen: September

Welcome to the first Saturday of the month where I share everything I have made over the previous month.

I had quite a busy month getting out and doing things so I didn't bake much this month, but what I did bake was delicious

Caramel Slice - I haven't ever made this cafe classic before but I have had it on my list to make for a while now. I was looking in the pantry and realised that we have a lot of condensed milk so decided the time was right. It was so good but it did make a lot. I even took some to work because otherwise we weren't going to get through it. I used the recipe from Everything is Indian by Justin Narayan. He has a variation on the recipe where he gives it Indian flavours so I might make that next time.

Black Forest Gateau - This was inspired by reading Mrs Quinn's Rise to Fame by Olivia Ford for Cook the Books. It was mentioned in the second paragraph of the book and I pretty much knew straight away that this is what I would be making. I used the recipe from You Had Me at Cake by Emelia Jackson

In terms of foodie things, we did do a traditional afternoon tea which I posted about here.

We also went away last weekend up to a place called Yarrawonga which is a town along the Murray River. There are lots of great wineries not too far away, and it has quite a lot of foodie things up in the area. We went for lunch at a winery we had been to before. The setting is lovely but the food wasn't as good as it was last time.

We then went to visit an olive producer called Gooramadda. This was a man who is passionate about his olives. We did an olive oil tasting and it was really interesting! We learnt how to tell if olive oil is good quality, why we should buy it in casks instead of bottles and more. I had to buy one of the Frock oils because the bottles are so cool. This one is a citrus flavoured olive oil.

After that we crossed the border into New South Wales and went to a town called Corowa. There we visited a chocolate and whiskey factory that has been established in a former mill. They have done such a great job. There's the chocolate and whiskey areas but there is also a cafe with an outdoor area and I really cool events area. I would totally love to go back there again.

One of the things that our friends had been recommended by the olive guy on a previous visit was these packets of freeze dried cheese. It's not something that I would necessarily have picked up off the supermarket shelves but we had some in a salad and they give a really good burst of flavour. I have already ordered some!
