I am going to be an aunt for the first time towards the end of September, and so in a couple of weeks time I am co-hosting a baby shower. Only problem is, I haven't been to one for years! In fact, the last one I remember going to was for a child who is now about 17 years old!
So my question is this.....Do you know any fun baby shower games that we can play? And what kind of presents do you buy for a baby shower when you don't know whether it is going to be a boy or a girl? And how would those women walk in those shoes if they were real! I can't wear high heels these days and I am not even pregnant!

My favourite is the one where you smear some nappies with different kinds of food and the guests have to guess what food it is. More environmentally friend is the one where you have different cups of unidentified baby food and each person has to guess what the flavours are. Another good one is the one where each person starts off with a coin between their knees. They have to hobble over to a small bottle and drop the coin into it (coin has to be slightly smaller than bottle opening). This is supposed to simulate how difficult it is for pregnant women to have to pee? Or maybe it's supposed to mirror the fact that pregnant women can't see past their bellies, I can't remember. Another popular one is to have everyone guess how wide the pregnant girl's belly is, using either toilet paper of a piece of string. Then one by one you put it around her waist and the person who has the closest guess wins a prize.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't know whether it's a boy or girl, go for anything white, yellow, brown or light green. Or a gift certificate to a spa!

I've been to a lot of showers lately. Some of the favorites include gift bingo (you hand out bingo cards before the mom-to-be starts opening gifts, and fill in the blanks with things you think she'll get, then they cross them off as the gifts are opened. If you get a "bingo" you win a prize).
ReplyDeleteAnother is a team game where you give each team a list of baby names and celebrities, and you try to match the baby to its celebrity parent (ie, Apple and Gwyneth Paltrow).
Then there's the blindfold you up and see how long it takes you to diaper a teddy bear or doll properly. The winner gets a prize.
Get some clothespins and put one on each person as they come into the shower. The object of them game is to not say "baby". If you hear someone say baby, you get their pin. At the end of the shower, whoever has the most pins wins a prize. This is a tough one.
Um... what else? I know there's more. Can't remember too many of them right now.
As for gifts -- clothes are always useful, though I try to get clothes for when the baby is a little older (and keep in mind that if it's winter when the baby turns 6 months old, get something warmer). I'm also a big fan of getting a bunch of great kids books and/or CDs with nursery rhyme songs on them.
I second the suggestiong for baby books, especially board ones. They get so many clothes, and blankets anyway. Another nice gift I received was a beautiful large hat-box style box with Winnie-the-Pooh characters all over it, which I now use for baby mementos.

At my baby shower, we had a game where everyone tried to guess how big around my stomach was by cutting off a length of yarn. We also had the 'say baby' game where everyone has a clothespin and anyone who says baby loses theirs. The last with the pin on wins.

Most people have gift registry these days... I don't think I've ever had to just go out and buy something. The most useful items I received were onesies, bibs and burp cloths. You go through so many in the first 6 months!
Most of the baby showers I've been to have had a bowl filled with raw rice and different sized safety pins. Each guest is given 30 seconds to pull as many pins as they can from the bowl. The person with the most pins wins. It sounds easy, but when you put your hands in the bowl it's not as easy as you'd think.
