Indoctrination

This week's Booking Through Thursday question:

Using a suggestion from Erin today:

When growing up did your family share your love of books? If so, did one person get you into reading? And, do you have any family-oriented memories with books and reading? (Family trips to bookstore, reading the same book as a sibling or parent, etc.)

You know, there are many ways that I am different from the rest of my family, and reading is only one of them!

I have no idea if my dad reads at all. I can't remember ever seeing him do so. My mum reads infrequently. My sister likes to read, but she finds it difficult and can read the same book for months. As for my younger brother, well, he reads a bit.

I most certainly can't remember taking family trips to the bookstore or the library, or anything like that. In fact, I can't even remember my mother reading with me for school.

It is one of the things that I am trying to do differently with my son. We often go to the bookstore and library together. When we go to Borders it is more likely to be me whining and saying "Can we go now" than the other way around! Another thing I try to do differently is to take him to exhibitions and museums and art galleries. Some times it works....sometimes it doesn't!

  1. I'm so glad you're bringing your son into your love of books. My mother did that for me, and I'm so grateful that she did!

  2. It's lovely that you are sharing your love of books with your son. When we get around to having kids I am sure we will try as me and my husband both love reading. I wonder how you first got into reading if it wasn't soemthing your family did. I wonder if it was a particular school book you loved or something.

  3. Not that I remember Rhinoa. For me as a kid, reading was an escape from the unhappy home life that we had with my parents arguing and fighting, and then with a messy divorce. Reading was my coping mechanism.

  4. I have similar situation like yours, Marg. That's nice to see you're doing things differently with your son. I have the same thing in mind when I have my own kids. :)

  5. Trips to the bookstore are great bonding opportunities! Great job bringing your son up that way, too ^_^ I'd do the same when I have my own kids.

  6. I love it that your son is being brought up with a love of books. All my kids like to read...so far anyway. They love to go to the library and the bookstores!

    Happy Thursday!

  7. I too would definitely love it if my kid would get into books too. I'm sure we could even share the same favorites. I look forward to that day. :)

  9. Hang in there with the indoctrination. When my husband and I didn't yet have children we discussed some of the attributes we would like to try to inspire in our children. Reading was one of them. We listed things we could do to encourage their love of reading. Some of the same things you mentioned. Two of our 4 children love to read and a 3rd reads some.

  10. None of my family have the same interest in books as I do. I think it was actually my grandfather that got me into books. Unfortunately he died when I was 10, so he didn't get to see me have the avid interest that I now have. Everytime we went on holidays - I read! Everytime!
I have definately introduced my girls into reading. I love our trips to the library or bookshops. We have a ball!
