This week's Booking Through Thursday question:

Do you have “issues” with too much profanity or overly explicit (ahem) “romantic” scenes in books? Or do you take them in stride? Have issues like these ever caused you to close a book? Or do you go looking for more exactly like them? (grin)

Well, given how much romance I read, the answer to that question is definitely "no issues here". Having said that, I think that I do have a couple of limits. For example, I haven't read any erotica before and there really have only been a couple of erotica books that I have ever been tempted by so I guess I am not likely to read any anytime soon. Similarly, I am not particularly fussed by profanity, although it does depend on the context that it is used in!

  1. Marg, I agree with you on this.

I think some of the scenes enhances the plot, but as long as they are done in a tasteful way (unless we are talking about erotica here), I don't see anything offensive about it.

    Happy BTT!

  2. I love romance novels. I also like erotica. What I don't like is pointless sex scenes that do nothing for plot development, and read like softcore or hardcore porn. My sister thinks that it is hilarious that I take this stance, due to my job. LOL. happy btt-- which romances do you usually read?

  3. I do enjoy the 'erotic romance' novels that have become more populous now, that blend romance and erotica well. The good ones do a great job of making sure any sex scenes are a part of the romance.

  4. I agree. The plot really is the big attraction. Everything else is spice. :D

  5. Yes, sex just for filler is not very interesting. It has to drive the story.

  6. I agree, context is everything.

  7. I tend not to be phased by profanity and sex scenes either. Although in both cases, I prefer that the cursing and sex fit the moment and movement of the story.
