Save the Contemporary

Jane from Dear Author and Sarah from Smartbitches have teamed up to try and Save the Contemporary. Now I am probably not the best advocate for contemporary romance, because I really don't read a lot, but when there is a chance to win one of 20 copies of the upcoming Lisa Kleypas novel, Smooth Talking Stranger, and also a chance to win a 20 book pack from St Martin's Press, then I am definitely interested.

I am not really sure why I don't read a lot of contemporaries. I don't have any real aversion to them, but the only ones I seem to be reading lately are really the previous two novels by Lisa Kleypas, Nora Roberts and Jennifer Crusie. I do own a few that I haven't read yet.

Are there any authors writing contemporaries at the moment that I really MUST read?

Speaking of DA and Smartbitches, how is everyone going in DABWAHA?

  1. Pitifully! I totally slammed out of the regions 1 and 2 in the original tourney. So I signed up for the 2nd chance tourney and I'm waiting for voting to go up. Vote Spymaster's Lady!!!!

  2. I don't read many contemporary novels either -- nothing against them, I just like historicals much better and that's what I gravitate towards. Occasionally, I will read a contemporary if it's by an author who has written historicals which I enjoyed -- like Rosina Lippi/Sara Donati. Otherwise, I tend to pass them by.

  3. Lynn, I read some chick lit, and there are some authors who I will stick with, but I must admit I am not really that brave when it comes to trying out new contemporary romance authors.

Keira, afraid my vote goes somewhere else (come on LK!) I am still in the main draw, but a fair way behind! It's fun though isn't it!

  4. I'm not keen on contemporary romance because I have hard time relating to the women in the books. Age doesn't bother me, I'm not dying to be married (even though I am, it wasn't like that), my biological clock is not ticking, I'm not crazy about fashion and shoes....I would never be friends with these people in the first place. Am I crazy, maybe.

What can I say, I relate better to people in the 1500s :)

  6. Read Patti Ann Colt's Echo Falls series (two books available at The Wild Rose Press, a third coming next year). Contemporaries with real people, modern women you can relate to and strong family dynamics set in a small town.
