Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesday is hosted by Should be Reading:

  • Grab your current read.
  • Let the book fall open to a random page.
  • Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12.
  • You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!
  • Please avoid spoilers!

This week's teaser comes from page 158 of Norwegian author Per Petterson's Out Stealing Horses:

He ran back and threw himself onto his motorbike and immediately stamped hard on the start pedal, but damn it the motor would not start, and he tried again and again and again and then once more, and it suddenly came to life like a shot, and he bent over the handlebars and roared down the farm road and swerved on to the main road with the empty sidecar rattling on the outside in a spray of snow. Coming round that very bend was Jon, on his way home from school with his school bag under his arm, and he heard the motorcycle, and only just managed to throw himself into the ditch to avoid being run over and maybe injured for life.

Phew...long sentences! And I have to say even though I am 75 pages in I have no idea what is going on. I know who Jon is but I have no idea who 'he' is. Guess I will just have to keep reading!

  1. My Teaser is from Ellen Baker's Keeping The House. I picked it up at the library with mixed feelings but I just love it so far.

Mrs. Fryt shook her head. "I'll never forget the sound of her screaming, that June day when she got the telegram. Enough to curdle cheese, that sound."

  3. Great teaser--and I must say your comment on being lost 75 pages in made me chuckle!

  4. Hopefully, it will all become clearer as you go.

I loved this book. Hopefully the joy of it is not lost in translation.

  5. Strumpet, I know who 'he' is now, and I have to say it was a pretty dramatic part in the story!

Kim, it's always fun when you 'tease' yourself as well.

Kailana, it is the April book of the month for Genre Stew. Maybe you could read it for that?

Emily, I don't recall hearing of that book before, but my interest has certainly been caught!

  6. I read this book in January and really loved it. I was surprised too as it's not a book I wouldn't have picked up normally. I hope you do enjoy reading it.

  7. I think you are brave to "tease yourself" as you say. I can't bear to peek ahead.

  8. I started to do this with Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell. Finally am reading it. But I fear teasing myself. Can't bear the thought of finding out anything before it's time and/or its time. :-)

  9. Iliana, I am nearly finished it and I am enjoying it very much.

Bumbles and Mimi, I am one of those people who always takes a peek at the end anyway. I am careful to try and read only the appropriate sentences though (for example lower down the page I could have figured out who 'he' was but I didn't!
