Library Loot: April 11 to 17

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries!

My library was closed for four days over the Easter period. Now, I know that librarians are as entitled to a long weekend, but oh my goodness, I went through withdrawals on Saturday especially given that it wasn't really a public holiday on that day.

Never mind. They were open today and this is what I got:

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson - This is for the readalong that Carl is running as part of the Once Upon a Time challenge. The first questions went up yesterday so I am a bit behind but hopefully I will be able to catch up this week.

The Last Little Blue Envelope by Maureen Johnson - I read Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes last year and had checked the library catalogue a number of times to see if this book was on there, but it wasn't. That is, until a couple of weeks ago.

The Unseen by Katherine Webb - For an upcoming blog tour. I read, and liked, Webb's previous book, The Legacy, last year.

State of Wonder by Anne Patchett - Also for an upcoming blog tour. I went and heard Ann Patchett talk at the Melbourne Writer's Festival last year and thought she was really good to listen to.

84 Charing Cross Road (DVD) - Read the book earlier this year so I thought it would be fun to watch the movie adaptation while I have a few days off work.

Claire has Mr Linky this week, so head on over to share your link to your Library Loot post!

  1. Love, love LOVED both book and DVD of Charing Cross Rd. I have read the book and watched the DVD several times and never get tired of it. Will be interested to hear what you think of it. Anne Bancroft plays the Jewish American bossy woman so well. I loved her. She just wants to dive into the books and swim in them and Anthony Hopkins is so proper and lovely. Happy reading. Pam

    1. I have been meaning to read the Patchett ever since it came out, so signing up for the blog tour gives me the extra impetus that I require to actually do so!

  5. I'm hoping to read State of Wonder soon too. I went to my library this afternon only to find they have randomly changed their opening hours and now shut at lunchtime on a Wednesday. How annoying!

    1. Oh no! I would be very annoyed at that - especially with no notice.

  8. I need to check out 84 Charing Cross Road!

Brandon Sanderson lived close to the bookstore where I used to work, and he often came in for signings. I've not read any of his books, so I never spoke to him personally. My fellow booksellers, however, always raved about how personable and polite he was to all the employees and readers.

    1. Brandon Sanderson is actually here in Melbourne at the moment. One of my US friends was telling me I should go and meet him but since I haven't actually read any of his books that might be just a little bit weird!

  10. 4 days? I'd go into withdrawal too!

84, Charing Cross Road is one of those rare movies that does justice to the book. I hope you enjoy it!

  13. My library system also used to be closed on the Saturday of Easter weekend, but now its not, but I can see the advantage of having the Saturday off, especially if you want to go away for the weekend.

    1. There's definitely an advantage for the staff to have a four day weekend! No disputing that!

    2. I think Carl is organizing a read along for Nevermore by Neil Gaiman as well during the Once Upon a Time challenge.. hopefully I'll be able to swing that one. How about you?

    3. My library doesn't have a copy of Nevermore and I already have a ton of interlibrary loan books out, so most likely not.

  16. Wasn't 84, Charing Cross Road wonderful? I wish the store was still standing so we could visit it. I had no idea there was a movie adaptation. I'll have to look for this at my own library.

Hope you enjoy your loot! :)

  17. I'm reading State of Wonder for a blog tour, too, quite possibly the same as you. I've loved Patchett's work, specifically Bel Canto, so I'm really looking forward to sharing our thoughts on this one.

Also, I've bought 84 Charing Cross Road and yet not read it. Actually, it was a present for my mother, so I should pick that up, too.

    1. I wasn't as keen on Bel Canto as other people have been so really this book will kind of be the decider of whether Ann Patchett is for me or not.

84 Charing Cross Road is a really quick, but really good read!

  18. I enjoyed 84, Charing Cross Road both as a book and a movie. Even Lorrie watched the movie and didn't hate it.
