RIP VII (Readers Imbibing Peril)

Whilst we are just about to have our last day of winter and therefore the joy that goes along with those first warm sunny days, the flowers blooming and the longer days should be manifesting! But in the Northern Hemisphere, the opposite is happening and the days are drawing in. For some, that could mean spooky reads, and luckily I am not really a seasonal reader so I can be joining in with RIP VII, hosted by Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings.

The purpose (from Carl's intro post) of R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril VII is to enjoy books and movies/television that could be classified  as:

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.
Or anything sufficiently moody that shares a kinship with the above.

Looking at the piles and piles of books that I have around me, I think my pool of books will include

Fables 4: March of the Wooden Soldiers by Bill Willingham
Cracklescape by Margo Lanagan
Sea Hearts by Margo Lanagan
Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier
I Shall Not Want by Julia Spencer-Fleming
Fool Moon by Jim Butcher
The Greatcoat by Helen Dunmore

Also, over at Estelle Society, they are hosting a readalong of The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, which I might join in with as well, although I am thinking that I might just be over committing myself given the other books I have already got plans to read!

That's a starting list at least.

  1. That always fascinates me and freaks me out, in a good way, to know that there is a huge part of the world whose seasons are swinging in exact opposite to ours. It is weird and wild and very cool. I wish you a wonderful Spring and at the same time am glad you'll be imbibing the spirit of autumn with us.

Just read Fool Moon a few weeks back and thought it was fantastic. Better than the first, which I liked. Very intense mid way through and it just doesn't let up. I'm hoping to get to Grave Peril soon.

    1. It is kind of interesting isn't it! Also, that our seasons are so different from lots of places. For example, our idea of a cold winter is much much warmer than northern US and Canada!

  2. I hope you get the chance to read Fool Moon as well! I just read it not too long ago and it was even better than I expected. I'm hoping to read the 3rd book for this challenge :) Good luck and enjoy all of this scary reading!

  3. Ooh, The Great Coat is one of my planned reads for October. It will be fun to compare notes if you do go ahead with it. And Margo Lanagan is one of the contributors to The Mammoth Book Of Steampunk, another Hallowe'en month read for me this year; I ordered the anthology for the stories by Amal El-Mohtar (set in Syria) and Shweta Narayan (Mughal Empire). Hallowe'en is my yearly inspiration to venture out of my comfort reading zone, so it is going to be vampires, werewolves, zombies, and steampunk. All at the tamer, romantic end since I am a wimp, so not suited, I think, for this challenge. But I look forward to experiencing RIP VII vicariously through readers like you!

    1. I don't do scare-the-pants-off-myself-spooky reads either! The beauty of this challenge is that you can make it work for yourself!

  4. The Greatcoat - I had that out from the library and couldn't get to it. I must get it out again for this challenge! I really like all the Margo Lanagan you have on your list. We don't have the Brides of Seal Rock (I think is the title) out until Oct, here in Canada. Fables! Good choice, I've been really enjoying them this year also.

Wonderful selection, have fun reading for the challenge, Marg! And happy spring to you, as you say, we are just seeing the first tinge of fall in everything here.

    1. I have had The Greatcoat out from the library before too. You would think I would have found time to actually read such a slender book.

  5. I am thinking of doing The Little Stranger read-along..but I'm already going to be starting The Gone With the Wind read-along..ack! As is always said: So many books, so little time!

I hope you enjoy your spooky reads :)

    1. It's hard to balance everything to read all the fabulous books you want to read.

  6. I'm hearing a lot about Margo Lanagan at the moment. Time to investigate perhaps. And someone else recommended The Greatcoat to me. Nice list, good luck with the challenge.

  7. I listened to the audio of The Scorpio Races and absolutely loved it! So glad you put Du Maurier on your list; I read Rebecca last year and loved it. It reminds me that I need to read either Jamaica Inn or the Frenchman's Creek.

  8. Fun making lists even if you don't stick with them. I want to read Seahearts and The Greatcoat so maybe could fit them in.
    Enjoy your reading!

  9. I'm not really a seasonal reader either (kinda difficult with the long summers over here)! Jamaica Inn will be a great read. Will be interested to read what you think of the Helen Dunmore too.
