Weekend Cooking: Gravy Day (with White Wine)

I am a couple of days early with this because Gravy Day isn't until Monday really, but for my Weekend Cooking post this week I wanted to share a couple of songs about Christmas. Why is December 21 called Gravy Day? Well, listen to the words of the first song and you will find out!

This year is certainly going to be a very unusual Christmas for many people, with many unable to travel to celebrate with family and friends as they usually would. This first song is about a family who are unable to be together for a different reason.

Paul Kelly, who wrote and performed this song is an Australian music legend, and he is definitely a storyteller. Many of his songs tell stories, which I love.

As you know, I am in Australia, so for us Christmas often means hot weather and sunshine, rather than the more traditional cold weather and snow that is generally portrayed as being Christmassy. This song, by Australian comedian/musician Tim Minchin is now one of my favourite songs. I was going to say something about it being new, but the reality is that it has been out for more than 10 years now. Whilst we will most likely have a traditional lunch, no matter how hot it is, the reality is that at least part of our day might be spent outside, drinking white wine in the sun, or maybe a nice sparkling rose. We'll see.

To all of you who are celebrating this week, I wish you a very safe and happy Christmas! And if you are celebrating your own faith's holidays, I wish you all peace and as much joy as possible at the end of this very strange year.

And I thank each of you for your continued support of Weekend Cooking!

  1. Yes, peace and joy to you at the end of a strange year. But we can always have gravy with white wine. I just bottled a batch of passion fruit lemon mead, which will go nicely into the new, and hopefully better year.

  3. I liked the videos you attached! One day I would love to spend a Christmas in Australia. I’m just fine with warm weather but in north Florida we are having freezing temps now.

Thank you for hosting the Weekend Cooking, it’s always fun to see what everyone brings.

  4. Chips and eggs have been on my mind over the last week!
If I have to be here for the winter I wish we would get some snow over the holidays as the decorations look sad without it.
Funny, I made my turkey gravy stock this week.

  5. Gravy day? I did not know there was a holiday for gravy! Great idea. We always make it for the Thanksgiving turkey.

  6. Until I spent a winter in the desert volunteering at a National Park, I had never had a warm Christmas. But I have to say drinking wine in the sunshine sounds good also! We have had a busy week, with a redesign of the Blog and the announcement that another grandchild is on the way! I do invite everyone to come and take a look, it is all quite grown up, if I do say so myself. With that I wish all a very Merry Christmas no matter where you live, and a very Happy Holidays to all! Thanks for hosting this gathering each week, it is my favorite!

  8. Ah, white wine in the sun sounds wonderful! I spent one year in India as an exchange student, so that was my only Christmas in a warm climate. I don't like gravy, but Gravy Day sounds nice! I'm sorry I'm not more regular with my Weekend Cooking posts, but I hope to do better in 2021. And I really appreciate your taking over hosting duties, as well!
