Blog Tour: Something in the Air by Helen Rolfe

When a baby is left on the doorstep of the Air Ambulance base in Whistlestop River, Nadia, the Operational Support Officer is the person who finds it. For Nadia, seeing the barely two weeks old baby abandoned is a bit triggering. Whilst she is a very generous and open person with her fellow team members, she is a closed book when it comes to her past. 

Patient and Family Liaison Nurse, Hudson, is also somewhat secretive about his private life. He hasn't told the team that he is now divorced from his ex wife Lucinda and is the primary carer for his two children. His young daughter, Carys, seems to have mostly adapted to the situation with her parents but fifteen year old Beau is more difficult. He is quite moody and uncommunicative and doesn't seem to appreciate the fact that Hudson has had to work more hours in order to help keep the roof over their heads.

As far as Nadia knows, Hudson is happily married, so she is trying very hard to not be attracted to him, but it is difficult because he is such a great guy, both because of his role helping families but just because of who he is. When Hudson sees that Nadia is quite affected by finding the baby, he is keen to help her, and to understand why.

When Nadia left her past behind, she was determined that it would stay there, but as a result of an interview that she does about finding the baby, someone turns up that she would rather not see, and it is Hudson that supports her.

Hudson also has his own issues to deal with, particularly in relation to co-parenting and Beau's attitude. Do either of them have time to pursue anything more than just friends?

I really like reading about the work that the Skylarks do, for example, the emergency situations that they deal with. It was also interesting to see some of the other roles. For example, Hudson is the person who often has to explain to the families about what actions were taken, and what might happen next and Nadia's role including managing volunteers, organising fundraising events and so much more. 

It was good too see updates from some of the characters from the previous two books in the series, and I hope to see them again soon!

Last year I read the first book in the Skylark's series which features a helicopter emergency response crew, and I loved seeing the characters at work. I was therefore always going to read the follow up book. I can also tell you now that I will be continuing to read this series while it lasts!

Bess is a paramedic on an emergency response helicopter crew. It is a high pressure job where you see people at critical moments in their lives. She had a very close relationship with her father, who always was saving for the future. It was a future that never came as he passed away unexpectedly. Ever since that day Bess has been living for the moment, buying whatever she wants, going on holidays, topping out her credit cards.  After all, what's the point of saving for the future. However, that recklessness is catching up with her and Bess is really struggling financially, just barely keeping her cottage. She is also shocked to find out that her mother has found a new friend, which also brings up some issues for Bess.

Gio is a fireman who Bess has been friends with for years. There has never been anything more than friendship between them, which is probably a good thing seeing as Gio doesn't have a great track record with the ladies. Gio has his own demons, specifically in relation to his alcoholic mother, so when she turns up unexpectedly on his front doorstep he is pretty annoyed, but he can't turn her away. 

When Gio is injured in a workplace accident he has to deal with the possibility that he may never be able to return to the job he loves, and dealing with his mother, which is a lot, given how much damage has been done to their relationship over the years.

Maybe, just maybe, they can help each other.

If I had to pick a trope for this story it would be friends to lovers. Literally. There was a bit of angst of should we, shouldn't we and then they did. There wasn't much where you could see the dynamics changing. Of course, they were supportive of what each other were going through, and there was a gradual realisation that there had always been something there.

There was a surprising amount of Christmas in this book. For Gio, this hasn't always been a great time of year, particularly as it so often led to disappointment, but there were some moment of pure Christmas joy. Some of those were very simple - the joy of a sparkler, the pleasure of cooking a meal for your family.

The build up to the romance could have been stronger but overall it was still a fine book to read, where the work that the characters do continues to be a highlight.

I hadn't read Helen Rolfe before, but as soon as I saw the description I knew that this was a book that I wanted to read. I mean, I don't think I have ever read a book where the heroine is the pilot of a air ambulance helicopter in the countryside of England.

Maya loves her job as a helicopter pilot. What she doesn't love is that ex husband Conrad, still seems to have a hold over her, no matter how much she tells him that it is over. When he is injured in a motorcycle acccident, this is just one more opportunity to have Maya at his beck and call.She knows what he is doing but she feels as though she has to maintain the relationship in order to protect her son Isaac.

Noah has just moved into the town. His life was turned upside down when he found out that his recently deceased sister has appointed him as guardian of her daughter. Not only does he have to start a new job, he has to work out how to look after a baby. And being attracted to Maya is definitely not part of the plan. 

This book has lots of layers and I really enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more from The Skylarks. The scene is set for a really interesting series.
