It's RIP time!

I was just thinking to myself this morning that it must be about time to start thinking about the next RIP challenge, and lo and behold, as I was doing my blog hopping I started to see posts around the place about that very thing!

Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings has announced RIP IV. RIP is Readers in Peril, where the idea is to read books that might have a dark or gothic feel to them mainly from the following genres:

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural

Carl's challenges are so well organised and thought out and this year's RIP is no exception. There are a number of different levels to choose from. I think I am going to try and complete Peril the First, where I commit to reading 4 books from any of the above genres. We can read the books from now until the end of October.

The books that are going to be in my pool of potential reads for RIP this year are:

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
Legacy by Lois McMaster Bujold
Undone by Rachel Caine
The Likeness by Tana French
Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray
Kissing Sin by Keri Arthur
Devil May Cry by Sherrilyn Kenyon
The Suspect by Michael Robotham
Grave Goods by Ariana Franklin
An Expert in Murder by Nicola Upson
The Golden One by Elizabeth Peters
Grave Peril by Jim Butcher
Death in a Strange Country by Donna Leon

I am also seriously considering putting in an ILL request for King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner and I am thinking about buying Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins when it is released.

I am also thinking about participating in Short Story Peril, as I know that I have Moonlight and Vines by Charles de Lint here to read shortly as well.

Chances are that I will end up reading completely different books than those listed below, but those kinds of surprises are part of the fun of these challenges!

You are so right! I often do that very thing myself.

I'm so glad your ESP brought you to the RIP Challenge again.

Looking at your blog header image makes me wish I could grab a stack of books, some good wine, a stockpile of food and just sail off to some hidden port to read and relax.

  6. I often read books not on my list too. I almost hesitate to make a list in the first place because I know I'm not capable of sticking to it. But lists are so fun to look at. :) Anyway, I really enjoyed the Cassandra Clare books. And I'm curious to see what your reaction is to the Sweet Far Thing. I have a love/hate relationship with that trilogy :)

  10. Nice list! My husband has read the Ariana Franklin and the Jim Butcher books and can't wait for me to get to them. So many good books out there and, of course, not enough time!

  11. This challenge sounds wonderful. Mostly because I don't usually read very much dark or gothic feeling books. Maybe I'll join. Although, I'm kind of dreading the idea of another challenge right around the time I go back to school. I'm looking forward to your reviews on whatever you decide to read - I'm sure they will encourage me to pick up some new books that are outside of what I normally find myself reading!

  12. I love this challenge. I'm working on my pool of books so should have that up soon. Of course seeing everyone's lists make me want to add more to mine :)

I say go for The Likeness - so good.

  13. I love your list...even if you don't read them! I love, especially with this challenge, how I start out with a list, then veer somewhere else. Too many good books!!
