Teaser Tuesday: The Conquest by Elizabeth Chadwick

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Since reading my first Elizabeth Chadwick novel just over three years ago, I have been slowly working my way through her backlist, savouring each new read, and trying to draw out the experience as long as possible, knowing full well there will come a day where I won't have anything new to me to read while I wait for each new book to be written.

At the moment, I am reading The Conquest, set around 1066, the time of the Norman Conquest of England. The teaser comes from pages 321 and 322:

Benedict said nothing. They entered the stone coldness of the church, standing amidst but aloof from the May Day celebrations, the hall of God, so different from the vast, starlit hall of the Goddess. He had worshipped at the altar of one; now he came to do penance at the altar of the other, and his heart was stone within him.

Elizabeth Chadwick's next book, To Defy a King is due to be released in the first half of next year. I really have only one question in relation to it. Is it May yet?

  3. Interesting - and not a period written about as much as some. Clearly a book to investigate.

  11. That doesn't make the church sound very inviting, does it? Excellent teaser.

  13. Jennifer, I am really enjoying it so far.

Lisa, hope you get to read it soon.

Lisa, the church does sound a bit unwelcoming doesn't it. I don't know precisely what happened exactly, but it doesn't sound good from the small bits I read near to these lines.

    Inthehammockblog, thanks for stopping by!

Kaye, if you like Historical Fiction then you should give Elizabeth Chadwick a go.

Misfit, apparently it isn't, otherwise we would have the darn book in our hot little hands!

Aarti, I am not that far in, so I don't know how much more of the conquest there is isn't it. It's not so much about the conquest and set against the backdrop of it. It also seems to be multi generational which is a little bit unusual compared to the other books I have read from Elizabeth Chadwick.

    Stacy, you are missing out!

Alayne, it is difficult to be patient isn't it?

Kaye, I am sure it will be May soon enough, and I don't like to wish the months away, but is it May yet? lol

Nise, Gautami and Amy, you should give her books a go.

Laurel Snow, on the front cover there is a quote from Sharon Kay Penman which says "Reading an Elizabeth Chadwick novel is the next best thing to time travel" and it is so true.

Fleurfisher - I can only think of one other book I have read set in this time frame, although I do have another on my TBR list. The one I read was Needle in the Blood by Sarah Bower, and I want to read Harold the King by Helen Hollick.
