Top Ten Tuesday - Sir Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction longlist

Welcome to this week's edition of Top Ten Tuesday which is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week it is a genre freebie, so I thought I would share the longlist for the Sir Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction. I have been tossing around the thought of doing some kind of mini challenge within the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge but I haven't yet worked out what that is going to look like! Maybe I will have figured out by the time the shortlist is announced

To be completely transparent, I haven't read any of these books, or even these authors but there are a number of them that have caught my eye. There are also a wide variety of settings amongst this list, from Tahiti to Australia, to Belfast and London and more.

The Romantic by William Boyd

These Days by Lucy Caldwell

My Name is Yip by Paddy Crewe

The Geometer Lobachevsky by Adrian Duncan

Act of Oblivion by Robert Harris
The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho by Paterson Joseph

The Chosen by Elizabeth Lowry
The Second Sight of Zachary Cloudesley by Sean Lusk

The Sun Walks Down by Fiona McFarlane
Ancestry by Simon Mower

And given that the long list has twelve books on it, here are two bonuses

I Am Not Your Eve by Devika Ponnanbalam
The Settlement by Jock Serong

If you love historical fiction, you are more than welcome to join other fans of the genre in the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge for 2023. The sign up post is here.

Have you read any of these books?

  1. An interesting list - I've read just one, The Second Sight of Zachary Cloudesley by Sean Lusk, which I enjoyed. I'd like to read Ancestry, Act of Oblivion and The Romantic.

  3. I've read two - The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho and These days. I have copies of The Romantic, Act of Oblivion and The Settlement, and I'm gradually adding the rest to my TBR pile. Some on the list I've never heard of - author or title - and there are some books I was convinced would make the list that didn't. Quite a few people are tipping The Romantic to make the shortlist, perhaps even win although in my experience the judges tend to go for something stylistically 'different'.

    1. Prizes lists and winners are always hard to pick Cathy! The judges do seem to look for different things than I would

  8. I have to admit, I don't really keep up with prize winners or list announcements so I'm not familiar with any of these. I hope you enjoy them when you do read them though!

    1. I'm surprised you haven't read Jock Serong before! I really must read him at least! I did hear him speak at the Willy Lit festival last year and it was fascinating!

  11. Oh good - a new batch of historical fiction to peruse and it looks like they're not all about WWII - even better. Thanks for the list.

  13. I've heard people say this is Robert Harris' best book. I have only read one or two years ago but I think several of us enjoyed his wife's book, Miss Austen. These Days looks appealing without my knowing anything about it!
