Top Ten Tuesday: Trick or Treat

Welcome to this week's edition of Top Ten Tuesday which is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's is a Halloween freebie, so we can post whatever we like, presumably at least Halloween related. However, I haven't been reading anything particularly Halloweeny recently as I am all about the feel good reads at the moment,

Bearing that in mind, my post this week is called Trick or Treat, and the books will all start with the letters of those words.

TRICK

These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer

Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells

Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros

Cracklescape by Margot Lanagan

Kitchen by Banana Yashimoto

TREAT

The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Exit Strategy by Kelley Armstrong

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

The Tolstoy Estate by Steven Conte

We don't really do Halloween but I can say it anyway......

Happy Halloween!

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Have Read by Japanese Authors

Welcome to this week's edition of Top Ten Tuesday which is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's them

e is Top Ten Quick Reads/Books to Read When Time is Short (Books under 150 pages, or if you’re not a novella reader maybe spin this to be books you could read in a day or a single sitting.) (Submitted by Jennifer @ FunkNFiction.com and Angela @ Reading Frenzy)

As I am participating in The Japanese Literature Challenge I am going to twist the topic this week and share ten books by Japanese authors that I have read. Many of these book actually would qualify as pretty quick reads.

Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi - This is the first book in the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series. I am currently listening to the third book in the series. (my review)

Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa - I really loved this book, and then watched the movie adaptation as well (my review)

The Great Passage by Shion Miura - A fun book about the creation of a dictionary

What You Are Looking for is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama - This was the last book I read for the Japanese Literature Challenge.

The Kazogawa Food Detectives by Hisashi Kashiwai - This was a lot of fun (my review)

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro - I had to go back many years to find this book! I think I read this for a bookclub back in the day.

Kitchen by Banana Yashimoto - I liked this one but still haven't read any more from Banana Yashimoto

Hotel Iris by Yoko Ogawa - I must say I don't remember a lot about this book!

The Restaurant of Love Regained by Ito Ogawa - (my review)

Butter by Asako Yuzuki - I just saw this on Netgalley and requested this straight away! I plan to read it this month!

Six Degrees of Separation: Kitchen Confidential to The Burning Island

Welcome to this month's edition of Six Degrees of Separation, which is a monthly meme hosted by Kate from Books Are My Favourite and Best.  The idea is to start with a specific book and make a series of links from one book to the next using whatever link you can find and see where you end up after six links.  I am also linking this post up with The Sunday Salon, hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz.

This month's starting point is

Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain.

I am going to go with my first thought and see where that leads us, so my first pick is Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto.

I am planning to participate in Japanese Literature Challenge which is hosted at Dolce Bellezza so whenever I go to a bookstore I am looking for books that I might read. One of the ones that caught my attention in the City Lights bookstore in San Francisco was Days at the Marisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa. If anyoone has any recommendatons of books to read for the challenge I am taking suggestions.

Recently I read another book set in a  bookstore that was originally published in a different language which was the Door to Door Bookstore which was originally published in German.

The most obvious jump from here is to another book about a bookstore, but instead I am focusing on the word door. I am also jumping to another genre and selecting the YA book Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

One of the characters in Lola is named Cricket, so my next choice is The Rules of Backyard Cricket by Jock Serong. I read this book for my old book club and didn't mind it, but to be honest his later books are more appealing to me.

I am therefore choosing his book, The Burning Island, which won the 2021 ARA Prize for Historical Fiction.

Next month's starting point will be Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
