Top Ten Tuesday: The Classics edition

Welcome to this week's edition of Top Ten Tuesday which is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week the theme is Favorite Heroines (or heroes, if you prefer!) but I am going to go off topic this week...again. I am currently listening to Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, so I thought that I would share classics I have read. I know that I should have read many more, but oh well. No guilt allowed right!

Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne - Listening to this now!

Les Miserable by Victor Hugo - What a massive undertaking this was!

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll - I read this last year for Cook the Books and thoroughly enjoyed it!

East of Eden by John Steinbeck -   There's several books on this list that I read thanks to Oprah's book club!

The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald - I read this back in high school and then read it again 10 years ago.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - This was another Oprah read. I did end up going on to read and enjoy a number of his books.

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen  - Still the only Austen I have ever read - Shocking I know!

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens - I read this after reading Mr Pip!

North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell - I did think about putting up the cover of the DVD of the BBC series as the picture here (hello Richard Armitage) but I restrained myself!

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy - I really enjoyed this! Another Oprah read!

What's your favourite classic?

  1. Oprah has led many of us into reading books we might not have originally planned to read. I'm glad to see how much you enjoyed many of these.

    1. 100% would not have read some of these without the Oprah book club Deb!

  2. The majority of classics I've read were because of school. The only classic I've read that wasn't for school is The Count of Monte Cristo.

    1. It was. I did try to start listening to David Copperfield but didn't get very far.

  4. I loved Les Mis. I read the unabridged version, which had over 1400 pages. Because it's so large, I don't know if I'll ever read it again--maybe someday. I liked Sense and Sensibility, too, though my favorite Austen book is Persuasion. I loved both North and South and Wives and daughters by Gaskell (and loved both movie versions, too). My favorites from Dickens are A Tale of Two Cities and David Copperfield. Another favorite classic is Jane Eyre. I just listened to Around the World in 80 days a few years ago and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I've just discovered Anthony Trollope recently and enjoyed his Barsetshire series, especially Doctor Thorne. Julian Fellowes made a four-part series of that one that was really good.

    1. I highly recommend the TV series AJ. I mean, it's a bit different to the book, but it is great!

  8. I think I read Alice In Wonderland when I was younger although it's one of those things where I don't actually know if I did or if I just know the story so well because I've seen various films!
