Sunday Salon: Historical Fiction Reading Challenge 2024 January Statistics

For the last couple of years I have been sharing statistics each month for the Historical challenge, and my plan is to continue to do this again this year. I find it interesting to see what are the books that people are reading and reviewing! Having visited most of January's posts, I can tell you that there are some very interesting books being reviewed - unusual times and places, translated fiction and more - and I have added several books to my TBR list!

In terms of the books, there were 59 reviews linked up for the challenge, shared by 23 participants. This is less than for the same month last year but I am sure we will catch up!  There were 57 individual titles reviewed, written by 57 different authors. There were 2 reviewers who reviewed more than 5 books each. Thank you to everyone who shared their links whether it be 9 or just 1.

So which books were reviewed more than once in January?

The first book was The Lily of Ludgate by Mimi Matthews, the third book in the Belles of London series,  which was reviewed by both Susan at Reading World and Laura at Laura's Reviews. This author has appeared a few time on these monthly stats posts which attests to her popularity.

The other book to be reviewed more than once was The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie which was reviewed by Shellie at Shellie Loves Books and Laura at Laura's Reviews

This month there were no other authors who were reviewed more than once, which is actually quite unusual!

If you haven't already signed up, it's not too late! The sign up post is here and you can add your links to the February link post here.

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Books that were reviewed three times for the 2022 Historical Fiction Reading Challenge

Welcome to this week's edition of Top Ten Tuesday which is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week there is no set theme so I am going to focus on books that were reviewed three  times for the 2022 Historical Fiction reading challenge.

On Sunday I shared the statistics for the 2022 challenge and highlighted five books that were the most reviewed during the year. You can see that post here.

There were, however, 16 books that were reviewed three times each and these are the books that I am going to focus on today. The question was how to get from 16 to 10. I didn't quite manage it, but here are 10 11 books that were reviewed three times for the 2022 Historical Fiction Reading Challenge which also begin with the word "The".

The Belle of Belgrave Square by Mimi Matthews - This is the second book in the Belles of London series. The first book, The Sirens of Sussex was also reviewed 4 times.

The Brightest Star by Emma Harcourt - If you are looking for a change from WWII fiction, this book is set in Renaissance Italy.

The Christie Affair by Nina de Gramont - I wonder if we will ever know what happened to Agatha Christie when she disappeared for 11 days back in 1926.

The Dance Tree by Kiran Millwood Hargrave - This book is set in 1518 and talks about the strange phenomenon of dancing women.

The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn - It's not really a surprise to see Kate Quinn at the top of the list of books reviewed.

The Fugitive Colours by Nancy Bilyeau - This is the second book in Genevieve Planche series, set in 1700s London.

The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan - I am reading this one at the moment.

The Leviathan by Rosie Andrews - Set in 1600's England during the Civil War

The Man in the Bunker by Rory Clements - This is the 6th book in the Tom Wilde series of historical thrillers set in WWII

The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell - Maggie O'Farrell turns her attention to medieval Italy

The Night Ship by Jess Kidd - This is the bonus book for this list. In theory, I am reading this at the moment.

It's not too late to sign up for this year's challenge. All the details can be found here. Whether you already love historical fiction or if you want to begin to explore the genre, you are most welcome to join us!

Sunday Salon: Historical Fiction Reading Challenge - 2022 stats

This year, as part of the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge, I have been providing some stats after each month. Today I am sharing a few stats about December, and then I will do the overall stats for the whole year!

During December there were 49 reviews shared by 16 participants. There were lots of people who shared multiple reviews, including 3 people who shared 5 or more reviews. Thank you to everyone who has shared! As I have been away for most of January, I won't necessarily get around to everyone's posts for December, but I will be back to commenting in January!

In terms of the books, there were 47 individual titles reviewed, written by 43 different authors, although three books were co-authored and I am never quite sure whether to count those more than once!

There were two books that were reviewed multiple times. The first book was The Darllings of the Asylum by Noel O'Reilly which was reviewed at both She Reads Novels and What Cathy Read Next.

The other book that was reviewed twice this month was The Sisters of Sea View by Julie Klassen which was reviewed at Laura's Reviews and A Darn Good Read.

In additon, there were four other authors who were reviewed multiple times. They were Elizabeth Peters, Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch, Michael P Spradlin and Verity Bright. This is the second month in a row that Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch has been reviewed multiple times!

Now that I have shared the December stats, lets move onto the statistics for the whole year! Are you ready?

During 2022 there were a total 841 reviews added to the challenge. This compares to 775 reviews during 2021. The 841 reviews were for 735 individual titles written by 594 authors and submitted by 48 different reviewers.

Let's start with the month by month numbers:

November was the month with the highest number of reviews submitted.

In terms of the books, there was one book that was reviewed more than any other during 2022, with 6 reviews submitted. That book was .....

There were 3 books that were each reviewed 5 times. They were:

The final book I will mention today is a book that was reviewed 4 times.

In terms of the authors, the one with the most reviews linked up to the challenge were Agatha Christie with 13 reviews, followed by Mimi Matthews with 11 reviews, Verity Bright with 8 and both Gill Hornby and Natalie Jenner with 7 reviews

I wanted to give a shout out to everyone who reviewed for the challenge in 2022 whether you reviewed more than 70 books (which is more books than I read for the year) or just one. Also thanks to everyone who took time to go around on comment on other participants posts and to those who ssharred their link up posts.

It's not too late to sign up for this year's challenge. All the details can be found here. Whether you already love historical fiction or if you want to begin to explore the genre, you are most welcome to join us!

Sunday Salon: Historical Fiction Reading Challenge - October

This year as part of the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge I am intending to provide some stats after each month and then at the end of the year I will do an overall wrap up for the year. Today I am sharing a few stats about October.

During October there were 57 reviews shared by 19 participants. There were lots of people who shared multiple reviews, including  people who shared 5 or more reviews. Thank you to everyone who has shared! I am part way through visiting everyone this month, and there were some fascinating titles, and I added more than one book to my TBR list!

In terms of the books, there were 54 individual titles reviewed, written by 54 different authors, although a couple of the books were co-authored and I am never quite sure whether to count those more than once!

There were two books this month which were reviewed more than once.

The first was Mimi Matthew's The Belle of Belgrave Square which was reviewed three times. It wouldn't surprise me if Mimi Matthews is near the top of the list of authors reviewed when I do the stats for the whole year. It's not the first time she has appeared on my monthly wrap up. This month she was reviewed by Yvonne at A Darn Good Read, by Laura from Laura's Reviews and by Susan at Reading World

The other book that was reviewed more than once was Hester by Laura Lico Albanese. Susan at Reading World reviewed this, as did Terrie at Bookshelf Journeys.

One thing that did surprise me this month. No one reviewed an Agatha Christie book. It's not the first time this has happened, or not happened I guess, but it is unusual.

Technically, it's not too late to join the challenge this year. You can find all the sign up details here and if you have a link to add to the challenge the November Linky can be found here

I am very much thinking about next year's challenge. My plan at this stage is to have the sign up post for next year's challenge up in late November (just have to find the image that sings to me for the button). The December Linky will be up on 1 December, with a wrap up post Linky shortly after for those of you who like to do challenge wrap up posts.

Sunday Salon: Historical Fiction Reading Challenge - January stats

This year as part of the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge I am intending to provide some stats after each month and then at the end of the year I will do an overall wrap up for the year. That's the plan anyway. And today I am sharing a few stats about January, so I am sticking to the plan!!

During January, there were 71 reviews shared by 25 participants. Some of you, or more precisely 6 of you, have already shared more than 5 reviews which is amazing! Well done and keep it up!

In terms of the books, there were 66 individual titles reviewed, written by 64 different authors. There were several books that were reviewed multiple times. They were:

The Girl from Paris by Ella Carey - reviewed by both Yvonne at A Darned Good Read and myself

The Man in the Bunkery by Rory Clements - This is the sixth book in the Tom Wilde series and was reviewed at Secret Library Book Blog and also by Cathy at What Cathy Read Next.

The Paris Bookseller by Kerri Maher - This was reviewed by Davida at The Chocolate Lady's Book Blog and by Susan at Reading World. Paris and books! This definitely sounds like my kind of book.

The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray - This was reviewed by Constance at Staircase Wit and at Laura's Review.

The Siren of Sussex by Mimi Matthews -  reviewed by Yvonne at A Darned Good Read and at Laura's Reviews

There were 2 other authors who had more than one book reviewed in January. The first was perennial favourite Georgette Heyer whose books The Toll Gate and The Nonesuch were reviewed at Whatmeread and by Susan at Reading World respectively. Anita at Series Book Lover reviewed The Burning Chamber and The City of Tears both by Kate Mosse.

It's not too late to join the challenge this year. You can find all the sign up details here and if you have a link to add to the challenge the February Linky can be found here.

Let me know if there is another statistic  that you would be interested in seeing each month.
